Mini Top Hat - St Patricks Day 2011

Happy Saturday morning little Leprechauns! You didn't think I would forget one of the top hattiest days of the year, did you? With faeries and couture brides on the brain, The Patti, stands alone as an homage to my favorite whiskey drinkin', table dancin' people: The Irish.

Created from scratch using a Kelly Green satin, antique gold trim, peacock sword and goose feathers, oh my! Her round gold brooch makes her completely one of a kind, so only one lucky lady gets to take her out!

I see Patti with some knee high boots, denim jacket, and maybe some of this on your lips. My idea of St. Patty's day is taking it over the top...casually. ;)

M-A-C Tinted Lip Conditioner in Petting Pink - $15.00

And definitely some of this:

Thrift Find Friday!

I'm pretty crafty but I'm even thriftier. Thrift Find Friday will probably be your best bet at snagging your favorite vintage pins for your hat before they're gone!

Had a chance to stop by one of my favorite thrift shops in the city this afternoon. Ye Old Antique Barn has definite bankers hours but it is always filled with new glorious treasures that need a little cleaning, painting or re-purposing. Went in looking for clay pots and came out with these goodies:

The set of 4 silver wine goblets are unbelievably tarnished but if elbow grease doesn't work, I think they'll make for some sturdy candle holders. :))

And who doesn't need more awesome candy dishes and gaudy gold frames? (Me.)

The turquoise piece is eerily similar to what I'm wearing today...

If you ask me, those cameos need to go for a quick spin before they're pinned down! But, that sewing machine pin! Sigh* that is just waiting for the perfect home on a really striking hat. Perhaps something with black net and red roses?? I guess we'll see... :)

Wishing you all a creative, sunny weekend!

Mini Top Hat - A Midsummer Night's Dream

I, for one, I am dreaming of summer festivals, backyard lanterns and bare feet. I am so glad C came along with her gorgeous wedding details in Persian purple and monochromatic blues. Mosses, branches, whimsical bow ties for the boys and, of course, tea pots! (A girl after my own heart!)

I am fairly certain that every mother secretly wants to see her daughter in a veil. I wore two veils as I walked down the aisle to appease everyone. True story. To me: this french net is the perfect compromise. It is tucked within the flowers to give it natural, full look then cascades along the side and bottom of the brim to give the illusion and certainly the feel of wearing a bird cage veil. (I tried this on and gasped. I am now planning my 678th wedding..)

I created a ruffle from both dupioni silks to keep with the elegant feel C is going for. It also acts as a little flower cone for the spray of purple flowers. Details! Details!

It shouldn't be a hard transition today to work on Faerie hats for the festival!
p.s. - If you are in the Maryland area or are a faerie lovin', travelin' gnome: You get a FREE PASS to the Faerie Festival when you become a Two Back Flats fan on Facebook.

Mini Top Hat - The Bijou

All that glitters is quite obviously gold.

The ever delightful Tonya of Tonya Joy Photography held a carnival inspired photography workshop in sunny California last week. Tonya's vision was my personal circus dream. Among the pages of completely glittered fantasy inspiration, she included this:

Well, we all know how much I truly adore the carnival and working with glitter. I immediately knew I wanted to make the Bijou. A sleek, elegant, whimsical and delicate hat that is completely couture. But first! I had to get the ribbons and lollipops out of my system. Here is just a peek of other top hats inspired by Tonya.

(Jasika fact: I am a hoarder. I have had these colorful pastel ribbons since 2007 when Petite Four Couture was born. They were included on the very first PFC gift box. I may keep this hat for myself... See? Hoarder.)

I don't blame Tonya one bit for choosing The Bijou for the photo shoot. It looks right at home.

You must swing by to Tonya's blog for more breathtaking carnival photos from the day.

In my next life, I will come back as an interior designer. Fingers crossed*
