Victorian Tea Party Mini Top Hat

Try as hard as you possibly can to contain your jealousy: The lady I made this hat for gives pony rides for a living. And they're not just ponies. They're rainbow haired ponies.
You know how I feel about rainbow hair.

Magical things happen to magical people. Just as I was completing her headpiece, I found this vintage horse cameo locket to complete it. Seriously. In that color blue.

This was a custom order to match a pink and blue floral Victorian tea party outfit Angela made for herself. If you love anything girly and lacy...you would flip! I hope we'll see pics of the whole ensemble together! Cough. Cough.

Thank you universe for continuously sending me the world's coolest customers and best vintage pins.

Mini Top Hat - A Midsummer Night's Dream

I, for one, I am dreaming of summer festivals, backyard lanterns and bare feet. I am so glad C came along with her gorgeous wedding details in Persian purple and monochromatic blues. Mosses, branches, whimsical bow ties for the boys and, of course, tea pots! (A girl after my own heart!)

I am fairly certain that every mother secretly wants to see her daughter in a veil. I wore two veils as I walked down the aisle to appease everyone. True story. To me: this french net is the perfect compromise. It is tucked within the flowers to give it natural, full look then cascades along the side and bottom of the brim to give the illusion and certainly the feel of wearing a bird cage veil. (I tried this on and gasped. I am now planning my 678th wedding..)

I created a ruffle from both dupioni silks to keep with the elegant feel C is going for. It also acts as a little flower cone for the spray of purple flowers. Details! Details!

It shouldn't be a hard transition today to work on Faerie hats for the festival!
p.s. - If you are in the Maryland area or are a faerie lovin', travelin' gnome: You get a FREE PASS to the Faerie Festival when you become a Two Back Flats fan on Facebook.

This hat will be available for purchase in my Etsy shop Friday, March 11th!

Mini Top Hats for Tea Party Goers

I had to share one of the custom mini top hats I shipped this week. When I ask people what their inspiration is, I love seeing photos of lavish tea parties and bouquets of peonies. But one special lady simply responded "Thunderstorms. Blue and Yellow". What a smashing concept. The outcome was a delight. I love this hat so much, I had trouble shipping it!

Created from scratch using my favorite* blue/gray dupioni silk. I tried to convey the rolling of thunder with the dramatic cascade of pale yellows. Bolts of striking yellow flowers and pops of dusty blue buds. The droopy yellow and blue stems in the back are breathlessly romantic. There are subtle rhinestones and pearls hidden within for even more depth.

Once the photos were taken, it reminded me so much of "The Garden of Earthly Delights" by Hieronymus Bosch. A little dark and a lot of fantasy.

I am thrilled to say this is now for sale in my shop for tea party goers, throwers, lovers of gardens, thunderstorms or anything delightful!

Very good things

Making tons of tiny hats and gearing up for a Faerie Festival in March! Which means I'm spending the day with my most fun friend, The Martha Stewart glitter kit. Only good things can come of this.

Speaking of good things, this wedding dress is the very core of why I adore what I do and why I adore my customers even more. I dare you to not be inspired by this.

Thanks for the extra pretty today C! Just cannot wait to make a hat for this dress.

Life is good. Happy Happy Beautiful Friday friends!

Mini Top Hats for the Nautical Bride

If you're anything like me, you love the outdoors, namely, any body of water. You think there is no better setting for a wedding than amongst nature. Well, outdoor weddings are no longer limited to bare feet and picnics. (Although, bare feet and picnics are, hands down, 2 of the greatest joys in life.) But, if you want to marry the lavish, natural, and the unique lets start at the top. Your head.

I was inspired by this fabric. Period. This series of nautical prints was my biggest fabric splurge of 2010.

They jumped out at me from across the room. The unexpected shades of gold and blue, the pattern, the depth, the stitching...

I want to thank Tiffany Elizabeth Photography for the striking models and stunning photographs. Another great joy in life is being surprised by amazing photography.

The blues and golds were so French to me. I wanted to channel Marie Antoinette for "The Voyage" hence the pop of dusty pink and the natural white ostrich plume. This color combination is my all time favorite and was the palette for my wedding.

This hat stands alone in its more subtle, whimsical tone. I love any bride who is not afraid of gold (or tiny hats). I can also see this as a sister hat for a seriously fashionable bridal party.

I hope you love these as much as I do. They are pure joy! Thanks again to Tiffany Elizabeth. Please go swing by her website. It is full of pretty!

Mini Top Hats - The Dupioni Silk Collection

Bonjour jolies! I am very excited and proud to present my latest collection of tiny hats! Inspired by my favorite lady rock star in history - Marie Antoinette. I have always been enamored by the luxury and details of French fashion, decor and pastries.

We can't give Marie all the credit though, Dupioni silks are my most favorite and most inspiring fabrics to touch or simply look at. It makes me want to sew fourteen foot curtains and ball gowns. Like all of my French net for birdcage veils, my silks have been imported from France ensuring complete authenticity and quality.

Mad Hatter Hats! And how!

Day 2 of Mad Hatter Week and I am here to tell you : You have all definitely not lost your "muchness"! I was blown away by the massive amounts of madness this Halloween. All of my customers who dressed up as the Mad Hatter this year did so exceptionally and with so much valor!

I wish you could have seen the studio bursting with laces and dates, satins and plaids in every color, feathers in every shape and size. You are ALL MAD and you rock my nation.

My favorite thing of all is creating a hat off of an outfit. While I love a girl who knows exactly what she wants, creating something as I go is how I come up with some of my best hats! Thanks for the faith <3
